About the Axis Deer
The axis deer, or chital, keeps its white spots for life and carries tall, lyre-shaped antlers. Trophy bucks top 30 inches. Axis were brought to Texas in the 1930s and the Hill Country has been prime axis country ever since.
Axis venison is lean, mild, and tender, and many hunters rate it the best-eating deer in the world.
Hunting Axis Deer at Black Eagle Ranch
Axis bucks don't all follow the same antler calendar, so there are hard-antlered bucks on the ground for much of the year. The heart of the rut in Texas usually falls in early summer, when the bucks bellow and move.
Look for long main beams, long brow tines, and good back points. A buck over 30 inches is a wall-hanger.
