About the Eland

An eland bull can weigh close to a ton, but it can still clear a six-foot fence from a standstill. They have thick, tightly twisted horns, a hanging dewlap, and a tuft of dark hair on the forehead that grows thicker as the bull ages.

Eland meat is also some of the best of any African animal: lean and mild.

II. The Hunt

Hunting Eland at Black Eagle Ranch

Eland cover a lot of ground, and a big bull will make you work. On the ranch, expect to glass open grass edges and follow them through the oaks until one gives you a shot.

An old bull goes blue-grey, with a heavy dewlap and a dark forehead mat. Horn length matters less than age and body.
