About the Gemsbok
The gemsbok has a black-and-white face mask, black flank stripes, and straight, rapier-like horns that run 30 to 40 inches. It is the classic Kalahari oryx, and one of the most recognizable animals in Africa.
Gemsbok live in desert country and can go long stretches without water, so they handle a Texas summer without trouble. They are muscular and aggressive, and they have been known to hold off predators with those horns.
Hunting Gemsbok at Black Eagle Ranch
Gemsbok feed in the open and watch everything. On the ranch they move between grassy flats and cedar edges, which gives a careful hunter good chances to close the distance.
Shot placement matters on gemsbok: the vitals sit lower and further forward than many hunters expect. Your guide will walk you through it before the stalk.
Gemsbok Hunting FAQ
What is the difference between a gemsbok and a scimitar-horned oryx?
Both are oryx. Gemsbok have straight horns and bold black-and-white markings. Scimitars are mostly white with long horns that curve back.
Do female gemsbok have horns?
Yes. Cows often grow longer, thinner horns than bulls, which makes judging a trophy on the hoof an art of its own.
