About the Scimitar-Horned Oryx

The scimitar-horned oryx is built for the Sahara: a bright white body, a rust-red neck, and two long horns that sweep back in a curve like a scimitar blade. Mature horns regularly pass 40 inches, and both bulls and cows carry them.

The species was declared extinct in the wild in 2000. It survived because ranches, Texas ranches above all, kept breeding herds going, and those herds have since supplied animals for reintroduction in Africa. Every regulated hunt helps pay for the land and herds that keep this animal alive.

II. The Hunt

Hunting Scimitar-Horned Oryx at Black Eagle Ranch

At Black Eagle Ranch, scimitars run in herds through open Hill Country grass and live oak mottes. They have sharp eyes and stay close together, so getting into range usually means using the terrain and the shade lines rather than walking straight at them.

Look for a bull with heavy bases and long, even horns. Your guide will help you judge length against the body on the hoof, which is harder than it looks on an animal this big.
